Welcome to Seams Studio
At Seams Studio, we believe in the power of making—by hand, with heart, and in good company. Our core sewing classes are led by Vanessa, a Master Seamstress with over 30 years of experience in garment construction, pattern making, and sewing machine mechanics. She’s passionate about demystifying the sewing process and helping students of all levels build real skills with confidence.
Based in the greater Philadelphia area, Vanessa brings decades of knowledge, a love for her community, and a warm, encouraging teaching style to every class.
We’re on a mission to bring balance back between technology and handcrafted skills—and to keep the art of sewing alive, vibrant, and accessible.
At Seams Studio, sewing is more than a skill—it’s a form of meditation, creativity, and connection. Our classes offer a space to learn, unwind, and create alongside a community of like-minded makers.
Seams Studio was born from a deep-rooted need to create—and a calling to carry forward the generational creativity that shaped our family.
At the heart of it all is Grandma Johnnie Mae—a true creative force and the original inspiration behind our studio. She was more than talented—she was a visionary artist, a skilled seamstress, and a beloved community matriarch.
Johnnie Mae could do it all. She baked unforgettable cakes, painted beautiful works of art, drew with precision, and stitched intricate quilts by hand. But her true magic shined in the gowns, suits, and custom garments she designed and sewed with mastery—pieces made for both men and women, always infused with elegance and care. With over 50 years behind the sewing machine, she built a creative legacy stitched with skill, grace, and love.
Known for her style, beauty, and warm spirit, Grandma Johnnie Mae welcomed everyone into her home—a space filled with kindness, compassion, and creativity. Whether you came to learn, to rest, or simply to be seen, you were always met with open arms.
At Seams Studio, Vanessa and her daughter Sydney are proud to continue that legacy—sharing their talents and honoring the roots of their craft right here in the city they love and have served for generations.
We’re not just teaching sewing. We’re reviving an art form, building community, and creating space for others to connect, express, and grow—just like Grandma Johnnie Mae did.
Come be part of something meaningful. The thread runs deep here.
